The Berkeley Township Traffic Safety Unit is tasked with the investigation of serious and fatal motor vehiclecrashes. In addition to crash investigation, The Traffic Safety Unit targets and responds to problem areas on Township roadways. The Traffic Safety Unit also does roadway studies and site plans for construction and major events.
The unit consists of ten highly trained officers who are assigned to one of three different shifts. These officers perform traffic duties as well as regular patrol duties. Traffic Safety Officers are trained in all aspects of crash investigation. These include Crash Investigation 1 , Advanced Crash Investigation, Vehicle Dynamics and Crash Reconstruction. In addition the Traffic Safety Unit also specializes in pedestrian fatalities investigations as well as commercial vehicle investigation.
Through the Traffic Safety Unit, the Berkeley Police are able to conduct DWI enforcement via grants. These include, Roadside Checkpoints and roving enforcement. Due to funds and grants obtained though this unit, Berkeley Township Police were able to provide dedicated DWI patrols at all major dates throughout the year where driving While Intoxicated is historically a problem.
